Mark Herring leads the Strategy function for National Grid System Operator. Mark’s focus takes a whole energy system perspective on the challenge of decarbonising our energy system, which spans diverse topics ranging from open data in smart flexible energy systems, the system impact of electric vehicles, carbon capture and storage, and the potential of a hydrogen economy in GB.

His current work combines an understanding of the long-term uncertainty in the energy industry through the Future Energy Scenarios, with its application in informing the long-term direction of industry, policy, and the GB System Operator.  He is also chair of the ENA Open Networks Whole Energy System workstream, which is the first forum for collaboration by energy networks across both gas and electricity.

Prior to his current role Mark was the Head of Innovation for the System Operator and he has previous experience in rapidly transforming organisations across a number of industries and geographies.
