Coming from a background of Project and Operational Management in Air- Rail and Road Freight Transport Logistics.  Stuart has a Master Degree in Business Administration and spent several years working as a lecturer in Project Management, Business Policy and Operations Management.

Stuart joined the Scottish Government in 2005 to manage major rail projects. He then moved into Energy Consents where he was Branch Manager and handled major Energy applications above 50 MW capacity. Stuart then spent time as Private Secretary to the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth before returning to the Scottish Government Energy Directorate to lead policy development on Carbon-Capture-Storage. Stuart now leads a team within the Scottish Government which covers the energy policy area of Hydrogen.
