Tim Roff

Tim Roff

Tim Roff started out as a Civil and Structural Engineer with ICI Engineering, working on a variety of chemical and process sites in the UK. Tim gained supply-side design and build experience on infrastructure schemes with Contractor Mowlems and engineering consultancy Scott Wilson, before becoming a Chartered Engineer. Tim specialised in Geotechnical Engineering, becoming a Fellow of the Geological Society, and worked on buried pipeline infrastructure, after joining BG’s Research & Technology division. Tim sat on the ICE’s East Midlands Geotechnical Group committee, presented at various industry events - IGE/ YGA/ SBGI (now EUA) on the causes of buried pipe failures, and developed technology innovations for utility applications, e.g sustainable construction/ no-dig technologies.

As well as investigating several high-profile gas incidents, Tim went on to manage various engineering and safety teams working for BG, Transco and National Grid, working across the entire onshore gas value chain from ‘beach to burner tip’. His various teams’ work supported the gas network asset owner/operators with Research & Technology (innovation), technical and policy advice, SHE compliance and assurance, technical training, digital solutions, and supported the first (gas) network sales from an engineering policy and standards perspective.

After the divestment of the in-house research, technology and advisory business Advantica from National Grid in 2007, Tim joined the leadership team of the Health & Safety Laboratory, the UK government’s dedicated Health & Safety science laboratory, where he continued to lead and develop Engineers and Scientists for the next ten years, investigating all manner of accidents and incidents, providing safety research, evidence and advice through close collaboration with industry and continuing to support IGEM and its Young Persons Network.

After the merger of the Health & Safety Laboratory with HSE, the UK’s Health & Safety Regulator, Tim moved back into the gas industry supply chain to help solve industry challenges like de-risking the future of gas, and supporting the industry in a voluntary capacity (presenting at IGEM, YGA and EUA events). Tim has used his experience and understanding recently to help push the boundaries of digital innovation in the safety and knowledge spaces (courtesy of the collaborative Discovering Safety Programme led by the Thomas Ashton Institute and sponsored by Lloyd’s Register Foundation) and joined United Living Infrastructure Services to help develop its Design and Build offering for gas and water utility infrastructure clients and their customers, including reducing its year-on-year carbon footprint to ‘net zero’ by 2030 and putting in place the steps required to help owner/operators of new energy systems prepare for the energy transition.
