Newcastle University is at the forefront of research which is driving forward carbon neutrality and a Net Zero economy. Our portfolio of energy research brings people together to tackle the global need for clean, affordable energy. With particular expertise in hydrogen integration through the recently funded £10m EPSRC Hydrogen Integration for Accelerated Energy Transitions (HI-ACT) Hub; the development and implementation of full chain carbon capture storage and usage (CCUS) solutions through the ESPRC funded UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Community (UKCCSRC) and Newcastle’s involvement in the academic consortium NetZero RISE investigates repurposing existing onshore oil and gas infrastructure. In addition, engineers at Newcastle University are working on innovative and unique technologies such as membraneless water electrolysis through the Ocean REFuel Project. This £10m project will investigate the potential of harnessing offshore wind & marine renewable energy to produce zero carbon hydrogen and ammonia fuels.
