“ The European energy sector it at a pivotal time, and energy security is at its highest priority while trying to decarbonise and achieve the climate change targets for 2035 and 2050. ”

The European energy sector it at a pivotal time, and energy security is at its highest priority while trying to decarbonise and achieve the climate change targets for 2035 and 2050.

The 4th Europe CCUS & Hydrogen Decarbonisation Summit will be assessing the challenges and highlighting the opportunities available within the energy transition sector. Most projects are the 1st of their kind, assessing and analysing the lessons learnt from these are key for new project developers. Other topics to be discussed are bankability of projects, cross border collaboration, how to create a circular economy within the CCUS Sector. Additionally, the summit will review the European grid infrastructure and discuss the developments of hydrogen industrial fuel switching. We will also discuss how the European ports will play a critical role for exportation and importation in relation to energy transition.

The 4th Europe CCUS & Hydrogen Decarbonisation Summit will focus on the implementation of CCS & CCUS within industrial operations and how hydrogen can decarbonise industry and transport. The summit will bring together 350+ government officials, regulators, key industry stakeholders, leading academia, and service companies. This will be accompanied alongside a side exhibition of 20+ exhibitors showcasing innovative CCS, CCU and hydrogen technologies and services.

Sessions Three and Four

Session 3 CCUS Creating a Circular Economy

Within this session we will discuss the “U” (utilisation) of CCUS. The hard to abate sectors cement, glass, paper & pulp, and steel have a different challenge than other industries. The C02 utilisation process is crucial for their chemical feedstock to ensure they can create a commercial low carbon circular economy.

"CCU in EU regulations: precedents, challenges, way forward"

    - Short introduction of CO2 Value Europe, definition of CCU, EU definitions around renewable/low carbon power and around CO2 sources, why CCU is needed to reach EU climate targets
    - CCU fuels: EU rules incentivising uptake of e-kerosene, e-methanol, e-methane in different industrial sectors (aviation, shipping, heavy industry…) ; but also complexity and high costs from EU framework
    - CO2 mineralisation: clear ETS rules in place, ongoing carbon removals rules being adopted ; need for further EU action around certification
    - CCU chemicals: many good intentions & declarations, little actual legal provisions to push for CO2-based chemicals
    - What’s next: ongoing revisions (ETS, CBAM) & new initiatives (Industrial Accelerator Act, Circular Economy Act, CO2 transport…) will need to be much more hands-on to create real momentum to invest in fossil-free solutions like CCU

  • 15:50
Paolo Testini, Snam Ravenna CCS Project Update
  • 16:10
Fiona Auty, Head of Energy Transition, RWE

    "No infra without structure"

RWE’s Growing Green strategy is underpinned by two strongly held beliefs. Firstly: decarbonisation is the future of power generation. And secondly, a power company delivers more than power: it delivers security of supply. RWE does so through a diversified portfolio of assets. It delivers power from wind, solar and hydro when it can; and electricity generated in flexible power stations when it must. That means that power generation in large-scale power plants, which are operated by RWE Generation, continues to be a core piece in the company’s strategy.

Committed to net-zero operations by 2040, RWE Generation looks to decarbonise its power plant portfolio in its core markets (Germany, the Netherlands and the UK). The Energy Transition team, which is led by Fiona Auty, develops these decarbonisation projects. In her presentation, Fiona will introduce the RWE Generation portfolio and the current status of the decarbonisation projects, which includes BECCUS, CCS and hydrogen conversion projects. She will outline which choices have been made - and why – and discuss both the opportunities and the challenges.

Closer collaboration between government, policy makers, providers of technology and essential services, and project developers is the central theme of the presentation. Fiona will share what RWE believes is needed to achieve a shared goal: the transition to an energy system that provides a secure supply of decarbonised electricity.
  • 16:30
Alexander Vink, Commercial Director CCS, Gasunie New Energy

    "Building an integrated cross-border CO2-network"

Gasunie is taking decisive steps to accelerate the energy transition, with CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) as a top priority. Projects like Porthos, Aramis, and the Delta Rhine Corridor are progressing, demonstrating the Netherlands' leadership in building a connected CO₂ infrastructure. By leveraging its expertise in gas transport, Gasunie aims to support industry decarbonization, safeguard economic prosperity, and contribute to a sustainable energy future for Europe. Coordinated development across the CCS value chain is essential to ensure affordability, efficiency, and long-term impact. We need the EU to match that ambition if we want to jointly thrive the energy transition and meet climate goals.
